Folkdancing

Miss Chambers has been teaching us some folk dances this week.  We have learned Jibidi and The Jiffy Mixer.  Today we are going to learn the Bird Dance.

Handwriting Stars

Riley and Emily have been our handwriting stars for the last two weeks.  They were chosen because they keep their work neat in all of their books - not just their handwriting books.  We are working hard to make all of our writing neat.  Well done girls!

Clever homework...

I am sitting in the classroom on a very chilly Dunedin afternoon marking homework for the week.  It is only Tuesday and some children have already completed their work.  I am impressed.  The blend this week is ...fr and the children had to write words that have  this blend in them.  As a challenge, they had to use at least five of their words in a sentence.
Here is Harriet's work - with a little help from mum she said!  It made me smile:)

"My friend Freya is from Africa.  She ate some fresh fruit from the fridge.  She had a free ride on a frigate from France."

How many ...fr words can you spot?

Frosty poem...

We had a very frosty morning in the Valley two weeks ago.  We went on a frosty walk and did some shared writing to create this wonderful poem.  The children in room 10 use some very interesting language...

FROST
Shiny, sparkling
Like a diamond on a ring
Ice on tables
Like icing on a chocolate cake
Chilly, freezing ice
Glittery, frosty grass
Crunching under our feet
Footprints in the ice
Children like freezing polar bears
Frost like icing sugar
Handprints in the ice
Icy dragon breath
Slippery like a skating rink
Ice like gladwrap covering Dunedin

The Gruffalo

Today we went to see "The Gruffalo" show at the Kings and Queens Performing Arts Centre.  What a treat!!

We read the Gruffalo story and wrote about what he looked like...

The Gruffalo has big teeth.  He has orange eyes.  He has sharp horns.  He has a poisonous nose.  He has a spiky back.  By Holly

The Gruffalo has knobbly knees.  And turned out toes.  And a poison wart on the end of his nose.  And purple prickles on his back.  He has orange eyes.  And horns on his head.  He is big...he has sharp teeth.  He is scary.  He has white teeth.  He is brown.  He has fur.  By Emily

Sharing at Assembly

We shared our wonderful rainy day umbrellas at assembly today.  They look so colourful against the black backgrounds. Ava had a very clear assembly voice.  Nice job room 10.

Handwriting Star

Hendrix was our handwriting star last week.  He is a very neat handwriter because he keeps his letters all the same size,  and his tall letters reach the top of the line.  Hendrix is proud of the neat work he does in all of his books!

Stick Insects in our Herb Garden

Iman, Maddie, Tyrell and Grace found two stick insects on our cranberry bush in the herb garden.  Iman was brave to let it crawl up his arm.  It tickled.  We will put them back on the cranberry bush where they can munch on the leaves.

Guinea Pigs in Room 10

Lucy from room 3,  and her mother Mel,  very kindly brought their four guinea pigs to show us on Wednesday morning.  They were very soft and silky.  Here is some of the children's writing...

Lucy came to our class with her guinea pigs.  We got to pat them and feed them too.  It was fun because we could pick them up.  Lucy helped us to pick the guinea pigs up.  One of the the guinea pigs had beady, red eyes and the rest had black eyes.  All of them had a soft back.  by Satine

The guinea pigs were very fast and Lucy came in to our classroom.  We got to feed the guinea pigs.  The guinea pigs were soft and the guinea pigs were shy.  by Rachel

Road Safety Rules

Our Police Education Officer, Mr Somerfield, has been teaching us lots of road safety messages this week. We got to see his Police car on Wednesday. Here is some of the children's writing...

Mr Somerfield came to teach us how to be safe around roads. The siren was shrieking! I didn't block my ears. Me and Eva sat in the front. by Hendrix

Mr Somerfield came to our school. He showed us the police car. He pushed the button. The siren boomed out. It was noisy.

I love the way these children used interesting words in their writing.

Story Writng with Ratty Tatty Cat

Our shared book last week was called Ratty Tatty Cat. We painted Ratty Tatty Cats, and now we are learning to write stories with cats in them. Here is Eva's story that she wrote today...

One day, Sam the cat was playing outside. Suddenly a big brown dog chased Sam up a big green and brown tree. Then her owner said, 'Come down! Come down!' But she fell down and then her owner picked her up and she was safe.

By Eva age 5

We love the way Eva has a problem in her story and then the problem is fixed at the end of the story.

Sunflowers

There was an enormous sunflower growing in our garden at school. We looked carefully at the sunflower and worked hard to make the petals the proper shape. Here are our masterpieces! We think they look a bit like Vincent van Gogh's sunflowers!

Fire Fighters Visit

The fire fighters from Willowbank came to school on Tuesday. We got to be fire fighters and squirt the fire hose!
Here is a poem our class wrote...

Fire - Fighters Hose
long hose
like a giant jelly snake
curling up like a maze
squirting enormous water waves
like an elephant's trunk
washing the cars
a rainbow of water
splashing and crashing
down to the ground
