Our Visit to Portobello Aquarium

 Rooms 8, 10 and 11 visited the Aquarium at Portobello. It was a long trip on the bus to get there but it was very interesting. We got to put our hands in the touch tanks and look closely at sea creatures. Down on the beach we saw chitons, barnacles, periwinkles, crabs, tube worms and lots more. We even saw sharks in the big tanks. Inside the aquarium there were seahorses, octopus and star fish to look at. We really enjoyed our visit. On the way home we had lunch at the playground.

Spelling Stars!

Well done to these children who got their spelling words all correct today.  I love your confident spelling!!

The Legend of Kiwi...

We read a wonderful legend about the Kiwi.  It told us about Tane creating the forests and insects and birds, including a very special bird with a long beak and tiny wings...the KIWI.
We used pastels and paint to create our kiwi art, then we collaged the background using strips of paper.  Can you see your kiwi?

Beaks, beaks, beaks...

We have been learning about bird beaks.  Birds have different shaped beaks because they eat different things.
Some beaks are long for finding insects in the soil, like a kiwi;
some beaks are sharp, curved and strong for crushing seeds and nuts like a kaka or kea;
some beaks are curved and thin for getting nectar from flowers, like a tui;
some beaks are flat and wide for eating plants and insects from the water, like a duck or pukeko;
some beaks are short, sharp and small like a piwakawaka, for eating seeds and catching insects in the air;
some beaks are curved and sharp like an owl for tearing meat apart.
Which bird are you?
