Shared Writing
Last week we brainstormed words that describe birds. We came up with lots of interesting words. Then we organised these into a poem. Here it is...
BIRDS
beaks
sharp and long
like a nail
curvy
straight
feathers
colourful
show off feathers
soft and fluffy
silky, delicate and fragile
tickly and warm
claws
sharp and pointy
for climbing and scratching
perching and catching
long and shiny
or webbed...
chirp, cheep, chatter
squawk, tweet
tu-whit tu-whoo
singing
BIRDS
Feeding birds...
I have put a bowl of sugar and water outside my back door. The birds are loving it in this cold weather. I did see one fall in as it bent over the edge to get the water!!
Do you know what these little birds are called?

Snow Day
Hello room 10 on this snowy day. The last snow day we had at home was Tuesday June 16 2009, and I posted a photo on the blog that day too. Here is almost the same photo two years later. See if you can find it on the blog. I hope you are all keeping warm. I look forward to hearing about your snow adventures - take a photo if you build a snowman so we can put it on our blog. See you soon... from Mrs S:)
Aviary Visit
Last Tuesday we walked down to the Gardens with Rooms 8 and 11 to visit the birds at the aviary. Tahu, from Orokonui Ecosanctuary, and Sophie and Sarah, helped us find out more about birds' beaks, claws, nests, feathers and predators. We even got to see a kiwi - not of the real native variety though! Can you spot it in the photos? We had a great day and thank you to the adults who came with us.

Penguin Close-Up
Tom's dad was able to bring in this Yellow Eyed Penguin for us to have a close look at. It was about 23 years old when it died, and has been stuffed by a taxidermist. That's a big word - do you know what it means? We were able to look very closely at its feet, its wings, beak and feathers. Thank you very much to Tom's dad for bringing it into our classroom.

Birds, birds, birds...
What is this strange thing hanging in the kowhai tree outside our classroom?
It's a bird cake of course! We are finding out about birds and we want to attract some birds into the school garden so that we can observe (look at) them, and even name the birds that we see. We know that birds are hungry in the winter so we hope they like the bird cake.
New faces...
Welcome to term 3 and some new faces in room 10. We hope you enjoy reading our blog and finding out what is happening in our classroom and at our school!
