Rakau and Poi

We are learning to sing waiata and use poi and rakau to accompany our songs. On Tuesday we worked in pairs to plait the wool for our poi. Now we are practising using our poi with our song. It takes quite a lot of practise!

Autumn Leaves

We shared our beautiful autumn art work at assembly this afternoon. Dominic and Aryana shared their poems ...

Autumn is tumbling leaves like a fairy dancing round and round
Autumn is colourful like a rainbow
Autumn is a bunch of leaves
Autumn is raining leaves
Autumn is as cold as the north pole
Autumn is red, brown, yellow and gold trees
Autumn is frosty ground
by Aryana

Autumn is leaves like snowflakes tumbling to the ground
Autumn is leaves like m and m's and chocolate
Autumn is leaves dancing off the trees
Autumn is Akif throwing leaves on my head
Autumn is so frosty my mum has to put the fire on

Weaving with harakeke

  • We are learning about things that are important to Maori people because the whole school is going to visit a marae.
  • We did some weaving with harakeke.
  • The flax plant (harakeke) is a very important plant for the Maori people. When the Maori people first came to New Zealand, they used it to weave bags to carry things in, mats for sleeping on, and even to make clothes.

  • Moira and Lovey came to teach us how to weave with flax.
  • First the flax had to be cut. It was a sunny day which was good because flax can’t be cut in the rain. This can damage the flax bush.

  • Next Moira said a karakia (prayer) before she cut the flax from the bush. She only cut the outside leaves off the bush. The inside leaves are the pepe (baby) and cutting them cuts the life out of the flax bush.

  • Then we took turns splitting and preparing the leaves for weaving.

  • Back inside the classroom, Moira demonstrated how to weave a putiputi (flower). It took a lot of focus and help from teachers but we did it. We gave our first flower away because that is Maori protocol.

Stick Insect

This morning Shayden brought a stick insect to school, which he had found at his house. It was little and brown.
Mrs S. finds stick insects at her house too but they are bright green and huge and spiky.
"Why are stick insects different colours?" the children asked.
We are going to find out...watch this space.

Farewell Lunch for Braeden

Last Friday we said goodbye to Braeden. He flew back to Wyoming in America with his family. We had a special lunch for Braeden to celebrate his time in our classroom. We will miss Braeden. He was the snake expert in our classroom! Thank you for the special treats Braeden - we loved the american lollipops. Yum, they had chocolate in the middle.
